*I received a free copy of Closer from Tantor Media in exchange of an honest and unbiased review*Even if Closer is set in the Mageri universe, which I know and love, it took me a while to invest with the story, since most of it happened over the span of just a few hours, and Kane and Caroline were the only characters.
Closer is a strange little story, where most of the action happens inside of Caroline’s head, while she is unconscious. She’s not hallucinating, either, what happens is actually as reals as can be. Kane was on his way home, just needing the paper before he brought his beers home, when a stranger brushed by him and made him lose his last quarter. As a sensor, Kane could feel the man’s emotions, and also feel some of his memories. What he saw and felt made his blood freeze, that man was a serial killer! Even if one of the worst things breed can do in the Mageri world is killing a human, that is exactly what Kane does. He will not let a serial killer continue his bad work.
In order to not be caught and put in breed jail for the next 100 years, Kane swiftly lifted the dead man’s wallet and car keys, then drove to his house. Only when he arrived there did he realize that there was someone in the trunk – and that was the unconscious Caroline. After putting her on a bed, he touched her, and somehow entered her sub conscience, and she was not happy to see him. For the next several hours, they hang out in Caroline’s head, getting to know each other, falling in love and all that. What I had some trouble with was when they started saying things like ‘It’s always been you’… for all of the four hours they knew each other? I’m all for suspending disbelief, and I can even get the paranormals who fall in love more or less instantly. But saying things like always – and meaning in the past up until now – that threw me.
I would have enjoyed this more if less time was spent inside of Caroline’s head, because then getting to know them would have felt quite a bit more realistic. The story is well told, though, and of course, Poole narrated it to perfection! If you’re a Mageri fan, you will probably enjoy this short trip into that universe. Poole narrated the story expertly, though, and I will seek out other books narrated by her in the future.

This was a very different kind of novel from Dannika Dark, with most of the adventures happening to Kane and Caroline after she is injured and has fallen into a coma. The alternate reality their abilities creates gives them time to meet, get to know one another on a heart-to-heart level, and to build an incredible foundation for love. We had met Kane briefly in the Mageri Series and this novella adds depth to his backstory.
Kane is a dedicated loner, never giving his heart to anyone except his human sister, Sunny. His secrets about being a Sensor have distanced him from the people he loves, making his life difficult. When Caroline is attacked and Kane kills the man who hurt her, their lives become tangled in very complicated ways. She is unconscious, in a coma, yet when Kane touches her his abilities take him into the world created by her mind.
Although a shorter novel than most of Ms. Dark's books, Closer delivers a story with heart and impact.
After reading all the books in Dannika’s Mageri Series and the Seven Series all I can say is I loved both series and she is now one of my top Authors. . I’m looking forward to reading her latest series called Crossbreed. Both series were exciting, loving, humorous, and suspenseful and I even cried. Dannika’s humor is like no other and I found myself laughing out loud. She is such a clever word smithy. I apparently read the 2 series out of the recommend order. I read the Seven Series first and the Mageri Series second but it did not make any difference in the story telling. I was glad I read them in the order I did as I was left with a Big surprise and a very happy heart when I read the last book “The Gift” in the Mageri Series on the last pages. I was left with such a happy and satisfied feeling as the two series were connected in a special way that worked for me. I wish the series could have gone on forever as I loved the characters in both series. It was like having to say good-bye to friends you love. I highly recommend Dannika’s work and especially these two series.
What a fascinating read. This is quite an original story by Dannika Dark. There has never been a more interesting first-meet than the one Kane and Caroline had, and what a way to find your soul mate and fall in love.
I wasn't sure what to think when I first started this book. A book where 90% of the story takes place inside one of the character's head seems risky or boring. Not at all. This book was really good. The vulnerability that each character showed, the willingness to share with another at the most intimate level was lovely. The unique setting actually increased their intimacy and sped it up. In most cases it would be impossible to believe that two people could become so close, fall in love in only a few hours, but not here. Kane and Caroline shared intimate stories, feelings, and emotions; shared things with each other that they had never shared with another soul. They shared a lifetime in a few hours. It was a connection at the most basic level and it was profound. This made for a beautiful story. Credit needs to go to the author. Dannika handled the characters and their conversations brilliantly. Any misstep and the book could have been cheesy or trite, but instead was touching. You really hope for the impossible for these two. Well done and so entertaining.
