When the British privateer Port au Prince put into the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga in December 1806, her crew was seeking help. But the Tongan king Finau attacked the ship, killing half the crew and enslaving the rest. The voyage ended in disaster and death.

But for one young Englishman, fifteen-year-old William Mariner, a whole new adventure had just begun. Finau adopted Mariner, giving him the name of his beloved dead son, Toki. Alone and terrified, Mariner quickly learned to adapt to his new life. He learned the language fluently and soon rose from slave to a member of the noble class. He led armies into combat, took part in the sports and social lives of the Tongan nobles, and eventually became the lord of his own plantation. He and Finau's family formed a deep friendship that spanned the vast differences between their cultures.

This fascinating novel retells Mariner's story, bringing to vibrant life a courageous young man coming of age in an alien society. Intelligent, perceptive, and astute, Mariner found the Tongans admirable and intelligent and provided the outside world with its first intimate account of their society, language, religion, and customs.  It remains one of the best accounts available for Tongans to know what their culture was like before contact with Europeans.

Toki eBook Brian K Crawford Reviews

What more wonderful story than that of William Mariner, a boy of 15 taken prisoner and then adopted by cannibals, whom he led in battle until his rescue. Returning to civilization, the boy took up his old job as a broker, all the while writing his memoirs, which became the foundation of modern ethnology.

I discovered the story of William Mariner in Nigel Randell's fabulous book THE WHITE HEADHUNTER (this one about a 19-year-old). I then discovered that there was another book on Mariner, Crawford's TOKI, published in 2007. I literally couldn't wait for to send me a copy! Three days later it came and I found ... I found it pathetic rubbish. First of all, it's a novel in which everyone -- from English bankers to crewmen to the savages -- speaks Oxford English, and what English Here we have two merciless Tongans `'Tell your grey head to not worry.'' `'My grey head advises me....'' (ADVISES me!!!) The ship's crew (normally the dregs of society) never EVER mutters anything resembling a 4-letter word. To the contrary, there are numerous, highly uplifting sentences such as `'Bless you, Captain...'' The cannibals kill and cook people, but the vocable used is at no time more offensives than `'hit on the head'', `'they moan'' and then `'lie still.'' That said, there were two titillating sentences when a native boy tells William the Tongan word for `'a boy's thing and a girl's thing.'' (I mean, they may be titillating in Tongan.) My own books can be found on under Michael Hone.
